October 31, 2007 Uncategorized Comments OffSteve Nash’s jersey is a fan favorite across the west coast and Canada. Steve Nash is a national hero in Canada. Born February 7, 1974 in South Africa, Steve’s family moved to Canada when Steve was an infant and eventually settled in Victoria, British Colombia. Steve Nash dominated high school basketball in his region of Canada yet drew very little interest from colleges in the United States. Dick Davey of Santa Clara University acted on a gut feeling and gave Nash an opportunity. Steve Nash rewarded Davey by becoming the two time conference player of the year and lead Santa Clara to three NCAA tournament appearances in his four years. While at Santa Clara, Nash led his team to one of the more memorable tournament upsets in NCAA history beating the number 2 seed Arizona Wildcats in 1993. In a remarkable 4 year college career, Steve Nash went from a little known high school player to the 15th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. This was a very controversial selection at the time that was much maligned by the fans and the media. The Phoenix Suns already had Jason Kidd as their starting point guard and after two uneventful seasons in Phoenix, Nash was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Within a couple years, Steve Nash’s jersey was spotted all over the state of Texas. As he and Dirk Nowitzki, developed so did the Dallas franchise and in 2001 they led the Mavericks into the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. After several solid years in Dallas, Nash was given an opportunity through free agency to return to Phoenix. Steve Nash’s #13 jersey became a top selling item throughout the southwest. Nash earned back to back most valuable player awards in 2005 and 2006 a remarkable accomplishment for a point guard let alone one from a small university. Steve Nash’s jersey is one of the best known in the NBA and he has become one of the best point guards in the history of the NBA.
